SIR – In his letter to the Worcester News (September 18), Simon Wood criticises my opposition to the Bosch plant on the grounds that he thinks the proposal would benefit the local economy.

Mr Wood feels that the council should be applauded for attempting to kick-start the local economy with further manufacturing opportunities.

I actually agree that Worcester does need more industry rather than being paved over with housing for incomers.

However, the Bosch plan is absolutely not the way to do it.

Having one big employer in an area can totally distort a local economy and leave it very vulnerable to changes in company policy or market conditions.

The Bosch proposal is out of all proportion to the city and its surrounding area.

If it got the go-ahead and was developed on the scale touted by the planners, it would dwarf anything else in the area.

The local economy would become dependent on one company, and the results of that would be disastrous.

Look what happened when Rover collapsed, for example. What is needed is a broad range of small to medium-sized companies, housed in modern factories, on well-planned industrial estates.
