SIR – To many folk, some of the future plans for education must seem more like buccaneering than common sense.

For instance, there are serious concerns about what exactly is being cooked up for A-level teaching.

No doubt the proposed new academies will be fighting hard for the right to offer their own A-levels but shouldn’t we ask if it is a really sound idea?

If you look back over the years, the Sixth Form College and the Worcester College of Technology have served local students well. Thinking about the Worcester College of Technology, in particular, we see a proud record for A-levels stretching over four decades.

There cannot be many significant companies or organisations in this county without a successful Worcester Tech-type on board and often that was their great second chance after failing in school. So, to those who make the big decisions, please don’t forget all this as you move ever onwards.
