SIR - George Cowley says that foxes are bloodthirsty and viciously kill rabbits and hens. Therefore, he reasons, it is not objectionable for them to be killed. What - all of them? Shall we kill every animal that eats meat because they are bloodthirsty and vicious and kill others, or are some animals exempt?

Surely humans, with their immense appetite for meat, are also "bloodthirsty" and "vicious"? Does it make our species less bloodthirsty and vicious if we contract out the dirty work to slaughterhouse staff behind closed doors rather than do this individually? If we wish to justify the killing of a sentient animal we had better have better justification than this sort of flimsy schoolyard opinion.
