SIR - According to R G Spencer (Letters, August 8), there is a plan to equip the new battle groups of the British Army with new electronically-linked vehicles known collectively as the Future Rapid Effects System or FRES.

Apparently, if our forces are thus supplied they will no longer be able to work alongside forces from the USA, which will have different systems.

This is, indeed, wonderful news and an opportunity which must not be missed. FRES must be embraced in order that American hegemony over the UK is broken. "Yo Blair" must take uncharacteristic, but decisive, action to ensure that this occurs. Then, in days to come, we shall never again be bogged down in unwanted conflicts, such as that in Iraq which presently affects us. No more wars either at the whim of the Israelis or to ensure "gas" for American stretch limousines.

D E MARGRETT,
