Labour made mess of the Hunting Act

SIR – In his latest antihunting correspondence (Worcester News, March 9), Mr [Simon] McCullough complains that I use scientific data, peer reviewed research and the testimony of wellregarded conservationists to support the continuation of hunting.

For his own reasons Mr McCullough chooses to disregard such clear factual evidence backed by numerous ex-League Against Cruel Sports personnel and an RSPCA chairman, but that is his privilege.

Mr McCullough believes there are too many loopholes in the Hunting Act. This legislation was drawn up by the finest minds the Labour party could muster but because they don’t understand the countryside they made a mess of it.

The result is animals are now suffering and an opportunity to legislate against cruelty was lost.

Our countryside is a managed environment and part of that includes controlling some species such as the fox.

Mr McCullough may refute this fact but there are people who do care enough to take the responsibility.

The phrase “general snobbery” has been used by Mr McCullough to describe hunting people.

No reasonable person could think this is anything other than a reference to ‘class’, an obsession that clearly drives the anti-hunting movement.

Simon McCullough never said anything of the sort. He used the word ‘snobbery’ to reflect the attitude of all walks of life within the hunt. He never mentioned ‘upper class’ or ‘toff’ as you so kindly did in your previous letter. If think Jon Burgess just likes to put words into peoples mouths to strengthen his ancient views.

Tubs - just looked up "snobbery" and snob in the dictionary - basically your wrong and Jon Burgess is right. Longmans dictionary states, 'a snob is someone who thinks they are better than people from a lower class'. So snobs by definition believe themselves to be upper class.
I rest my case me Lod .....

I don’t know what Dictionary you use Sharps, but you appear to wrong too…
.
SNOB, snob, n. A Shoemaker; one who apes gentility; a would-be aristocrat
.
SNOBBERY, snob’er-I, n. The quality of being snobbish.
.
SNOBBISH, SNOBBY, snob’ish, snob’i, a. Like a snob; pretending to gentility.
.
GENTILITY, jen-til’i-ti, n. Politeness of manners; fashionable style or circumstances.
.
Snobs do not believe themselves to be upper class. On the contrary, it is the middle or lower class that wishes their selves to be fashionable and well mannered - nothing to do with upper class. They are just trying to be better than the next man. How ironic my lad…

Tubs - you seem as mad as a bag of badgers trying to keep this debate of the real issues. So please for the 3rd time lets
have the details of this veterinary report you keep on about -- I actually think your drinking in the last chance saloon with this one...

Sharps – If you bothered to read my last posts then there you will have your answer.
.
Maggie, I agree. The hunt fraternity and Jon Burgess create counter arguments to get out of answering the real questions. Sharpy thought he was trying to belittle me with Dictionary evidence that was incorrect. Now the tables have turned against me…
.
Sharps – I don’t really care what evidence or report(s) you have. Your knowledge and experience is clear to me. I am learning all the time from debating on here. Least I am man enough to admit it. For all I care, you could be an agricultural farmer or a spotty teenage nerd. You could be copying and pasting anything from the Internet to back up your story. But I don’t care. Lets get back onto the subject shall we..?

Tubs - yes I have just checked your latest post on our previous debate and added my own.
OK lets forget Snobbery but I do think anti-hunting movement does use the whole class thing to attack hunting when animal welfare should be their number one concern, in fact their only concern. Anything else does their cause a disservice.
The hunting shooting fishing coursing ferreting terrier work debate is both complicated and simple.
An example -
Name 2 things that red deer do in the glens of Scotland ?
1) they eat
2) they breed
Name 2 things that red deer continue to do ?
1) they continue to eat
2) they continue to breed
The red deer have no predators.
The breeding and eating continues even though the winter months take a terrible toll with thousands starving to death after destroying most of the habitat.
The time comes when the deer are on the edge of Glasgow scrapping at the flagstones looking for something to eat what are we going to do ???

Well believing in prevention being better than cure this is my solution.
1)A national governing body advises of deer management,( sustainable numbers, habitat management etc).
2) Proper culls are conducted locally by
local expert deer stalkers.
3)Guests pay to accompany the professional stalkers, (money into local economy hotels etc).
4)Venison goes into food chain. (organic
free range animal welfare friendly product etc)
5)Deer and habitat in fine fetal, good for tourism etc

This already happens most of the time thankfully but some people believe it is wrong / cruel to do so.
but they offer no alternative solution.
I hope the explains my complicated /
simple view of things .
Pick an animal, bird or field sport tomorrow and I will offer you my thoughts.
