SIR - So Worcester City Council is offering council tax rebates to people affected by flooding in July. Isn't that nice of them? But wait a minute, why are they using taxpayers' money to offer a rebate to compensate what was an `Act of God'?
I have every sympathy for the poor people affected by the floodwaters but if they didn't have their own insurance cover, why should the burden fall on everybody else?
The rebates are going to cause a hole in the council's budget, unless they somehow made allowances for such an occurence - a hole that will have to be filled.
Should a strong gust of wind during the winter months blow a slate off my roof or my house be struck by lightening, can I expect a rebate on my council tax?
Maybe it isn't as severe, but this could be reflected in the rebate not being as generous. Perhaps I'll just be penalised for having the foresight to have buildings insurance.
