SIR – In answer to John Phillpott’s question (Worcester News, July 23): “Why go to all that trouble of moving furniture when you paint a room?”

In the 1950s I spent a couple of years with the old Worcester City and County Fire Brigade. One day we were called to a chimney fire.

The person who had sent for us noticed we were observing some bare patches on the walls and explained that the previous occupant had painted without moving the furniture.

Needless to say, the new did not fit the old bare patches.
