SIR – Re your write-up about the St John’s area ‘Worcester shoppers urged to buy locally as traders suffer’ (Worcester News, July 30).

When I was a young lad back in the 1950s we used to catch the Marks’s Blue Bus Service from Wadborough and unload in the Cornmarket at Worcester.

From there us lads would go into the public hall in the Cornmarket and have a British Restaurant meal.

From here we used to walk up to St John’s and go to the Bush Inn. One man on the piano, one man on the drums – a great night out.

We then had to get back to the Cornmarket to catch the blue bus service back to Wadborough crossroads (some never made it that far).

The next time I went in the Bush Inn was when the football team I played for – Stonehall United – won the Phipps Cup (1963/64) on the YMCA field.

I was in goal that match and we beat Meco Sports 5-1 after losing to them 10-1 in a league match not many weeks before.

I have fond memories of the Bush and certainly hope that things will improve over the next few years.
