SIR – Various theories have been expressed in the Worcester News letters page as to what really caused the riots.

Chris Cheeseman (Worcester News, August 18) said that for 50 years socialists have been telling their offspring that if in trouble blame the nasty rich capitalists.

John Shearon blames the council cuts (Worcester News, August 18).

Jim Evans wants the sort of post war mixed economy where the majority of British people decide whose ideas hold sway when our government act on our behalf (Worcester News, August 11).

E W Taylor reminds us of Enoch Powell and how he was shouted down by the dogooders (Worcester News, August 18).

I am sure if those who took part in these riots had received the discipline experienced in an orhanage for 10 years that I had (if a little too heavy-handed at times, followed by two years’ national service when we came out as men, it would be a better world today.
