SIR – How ironic to read the anonymous bile about public sector workers on the comments boards.
Until a few years ago public sector bodies like the NHS and local councils were running with many vacancies that they could not fill, it seemed that people did not want that kind of work.
This led to a fortune being spent on advertising, employing private agency workers and recruiting foreign workers to provide the public services that we demand.
We taxpayers should also bear in mind that unless we use private healthcare, private education, have our own security staff and never accept any form of pension or benefit, many of us get more out than we pay in.
That’s one reason why our governments borrow, and why the emerging economies offer so little in the way of welfare to their people.
