SIR – Your article ‘Life was sweet aboard boat full of chocolate’ (Worcester News, December 16) brought back a few memories.

As a young girl in the 40s- 50s, living a few yards from the canal – Park Street Lock – we would wait on the towpath for the barge to come through on Friday evenings with its cargo piled up and covered with a tarpaulin.

One of these kind and friendly gents handed out small brown bags filled with this wonderful crumb...

delicious.

A bit of light relief from the stench of the nearby tannery, rationing, and NHS cod liver oil and orange juice, which we were made to drink. Yuk.

Happy days.
