SIR – It’s annoying to say the least to see that as train fares rocket MPs enjoy first class travel at our expense.

Recent reports show that MPs are on course to claim more than £1 million a year for first class travel – despite a promised ban on the practice in the wake of the expenses scandal.

While families are struggling with the rising costs in everyday living, and have been handed an 11 per cent rise in rail fares for a shabby service, MPs can exploit a loophole in the system and continue to travel first class while billing the tax payer.

It beggars belief that some politicians think they can live the high life at taxpayers’ expense.

If they want to sit in first class, then let them pay the extra themselves. Their constituents should be told and then it’s up to the hardup voters to decide if it’s right or wrong at the next election.
