SIR – West Midlands Police Authority, with its conterparts from Surrey, has invited bids from companies to contract out some elements of police work such as litter and speeding fines, patrolling neighbourhoods and some investigation work.
It has invited these bids on behalf of other forces, too, all with the approval of Home Secretary.
Critics are saying that policing paid by the taxpayer should not be used to make money for private firms.
Many civilian employees and community support officers could be transferred to the private sector.
But what of the public? Do we not have a say?
Hitherto we have been served by what is arguably the best police force in the world.
Is this phenomenon about to be shattered?
Estimates suggest that a partial private system could cost £2.6 million to £4.1 million (these forecasts of a £1.5 million difference suggest to me the final figure could be more than £5 million or even more).
Where is the saving?
