SIR – In October 2007, members of Worcester Stop the War were told by police to move on from the High Street for having a table.
The story was featured on the front page of your newspaper.
Last month, the activist Maya Evans was jailed for 13 days for refusing to pay £300 in fines and costs incurred after a court case in November 2009.
Her initial ‘crime’ was taking part in a nonviolent ‘die-in for Nato’s victims in Afghanistan’ outside Britain’s military base at Northwood.
She was convicted of obstructing the highway.
More than 400 British military personnel have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001.
Many more Afghan civilians have been killed.
It is time to end British involvement in this war.
Maya Evans should have been applauded not arrested, yet MPs and the media remain silent while hypocritically condemning foreign regimes for clamping down on free speech.
