SIR – John Shearon asks why not make bus lanes into cycle lanes? (Worcester News, March 7).

The answer is that cyclists already are using them (along with buses).

Because of a poor bus service, a few more people are turning back to cycling but it will take much more of an effort by the authorities to convince motorists that buses are a good alternative.

Over-60s enjoy free travel, but they are not generally tied to time in the same way that workers are.

To educate them the fares must be reasonable and the service efficient.

At present one can be charged about £1.90 for a single just from the city outskirts to the centre of Worcester.

With regular but reliable services and sensible fares, the 21st-century commuter (city at least) might be persuaded to leave their cars at home and travel by bus, leaving parking spaces for more essential users.
