SIR – A recent Quality of Life survey placed Worcester among the worst five per cent of local authorities for traffic flows in the UK.

Most of the few places worse off for traffic flow are in London.

The response to this major quality of life issue from local authorities?

They plan to build thousands more houses and add thousands more cars to roads that are already creaking.

The only ‘major’ infrastructure improvement to be made is ‘tinkering’ with the southern link road.

Worcester is expected to expand way above average for a town its size and yet has a totally inadequate road infrastructure.

Londoners benefit from three times per head more spend on transport. Why this inequality?

The traffic problem is particularly acute in St John’s which has already seen thousands more cars added to its roads due to the University of Worcester expansion.

Plans to build a further 1,000 houses, on top of 400 that are already being built, should not proceed unless the orbital road, including a third road bridge, is completed.

It is already near impractical to cross the river at rush hour and pollution levels in the Bull Ring must breach European limits much of the time.
