SIR – The Tory tax raid on pensioners to pay for a £40,000 tax break for millionaires is, quite simply, the wrong thing to do.

Making pensioners who have played by the rules all their lives pay for the measures to tackle tax avoidance practised by the rich is immoral.

Yet that is what George Osborne is asking them to do.

To justify it further by saying that pensioners are getting £5.30 a week increase on their pension is both misleading and insulting.

The pension increase is due to the very high rate of inflation in September when the calculation on all state benefits was made.

Inflation was so high because of astronomical gas and electricity prices, not to mention sky-high petrol and food costs.

This increase was coming anyway and had nothing to do with the Budget.

The Tory Budget says a lot about the values of George Osborne and his millionaire cabinet colleagues and who they really care about.

Thousands of decent people in Worcester and beyond, who care about fairness, will be disgusted that pensioners are treated in this way.
