SIR – Energy firms are taking us all for a ride.

They are making a profit of £168 a second.

This as wholesale prices tumbled and people used less energy due to the mild winter.

Consumers must surely be asking how is this so?

So with the £5.3 billion profit they made in 2011, it’s pleasing to see that while most families struggle to cope with the rises the energy firms can still hand out enormous bonuses to their leaders.

How on earth can Sam Laidlaw, boss of British Gas, earn a £10 million package last year.

And to add insult to injury he also recieved £684 discount on his annual bill.

His annual salary of £1.3 million is vast and many will question how can he be worth such a sum.

Add on his bonus payments, share awards and lucrative long-term deals and Mr Laidlaw walked away with £9.6 million.
