SIR – Re James Goad’s letter ‘Financial woes caused by so many factors’ (Worcester News, May 7).

He attacks my position in apportioning blame for our present austerity and doubledip recession (Worcester News, April 27) via my apparent ignoring of the last government’s “failure to supervise the City of London”.

One has to assume, then, that he is unaware of my contributions to this page to that precise effect, originally on November 16, 2010, and followed up on November 19, 2010 (ie, a year and a half ago).

He also fails to take into account the wholly nonexceptional level (by both historical and international standards) of our accumulated debt.

In addition, it is amazing that anyone who pretends to understand – or even to have perused – the data could claim that it was not the huge bail-out of the banks which caused the problem.

Finally, I note Mr Goad’s all-too-obvious one-eyed prejudice against the public sector (shared, coincidentally, with the present government); and simply cannot agree with his advocacy of isolationism which would have catastrophic consequences, both politically and economically.
