SIR – Two Worcester City Council directors have been made redundant as part of a wide measure aimed at saving cash at a cost to taxpayers of £385,000 (Worcester News, May 7).

The leader of the city council [Simon Geraghty] said: “There is always a cost to change but the long-term benefits are greater – sometimes you’ve just got to swallow a pill.”

The corporate management team has been reduced from six to three and a second tier of senior management from 15 to nine.

It makes me wonder how the original employees were kept occupied.

These cuts may sound impressive but I trust that we shall not soon be hearing that the council is employing consultants again to do some of the work of the permanent staff.
