SIR – I write to express my disagreement with Steve Davis with regard to multiculturalism ‘We need discussion on multiculturalism’ (Worcester News, May 8).

While I would not accuse Mr Davis of being racist or xenophobic, I do believe that his views could be considered illiberal.

Multiculturalism does not mean that society has to adjust and alter to accommodate the cultural practices of different groups but merely allows others to live as they so desire.

Which is something quite different. Mr Davis also fails to understand that while we do have high unemployment we also have vacancies in highly skilled professions such as academia and medicine that require us to recruit externally as we do not necessarily have people already suitable for these positions.

Also, the latest government statistics estimate that for every one person entering this country a further three jobs are being created.

I believe therefore that what Mr Davis really wishes to discuss is not multiculturalism but rather immigration, something which is quite different.
