SIR – I have come to the conclusion that [David] Beckham, despite his many millions, is an attentionseeker and a very lonely and insecure man. The people who are advocating that he should receive some sort of honour for the work he has done in helping to get the Olympic Games to London must be totally deluded as to his personal skills.

Beckham was given a special kicking role at Manchester United by [Sir Alex] Ferguson but I have always questioned his footballing skills.

I suppose his photogenic looks and his romance with Posh Spice came together at the right time for him.

However, we must face facts. France was delighted when we won the Olympics and it was us and not them who had to provide the facilities and the money to set them up.

I am certain that Beckham’s face would have influenced such a big event.

He has a very strong PR and marketing team who are very much aware of every opportunity to publicise the Beckham brand.

However, we must concentrate more on things substantial in our country.

I am sick and tired of opening the pages of newspapers with photographs of celebrities.

For me the Olympics has lost its flavour over recent years; commercialism and drugs don’t help, but the very idea of Beckham taking part or even being honoured is an anathema.
