SIR – How sad it was that a family pet dog was shot dead by a farmer (Worcester News, June 29).

How heartless to shoot a defenceless animal. The farmer could have chased it off or fired warning shots, not shoot it dead. It is sad when dogs injure sheep or lambs, no one likes that.

The farmers have no feelings for most animals. If they did they could not be cattle and sheep farmers.

Most of the sheep and cattle go to slaughter. It takes a special kind of person to do that job.

The dog or dogs do not know it is wrong to bother sheep or cattle, it’s in their natural instincts.

As an animal and dog lover I find it appalling.

The owners of the dog, knowing their pet got out of the garden, should have been more responsible and made sure the fencing was higher or supervised the dog in the garden. The heartache this has caused could have been avoided by both parties. It’s so sad.
