SIR – The public should be
very sceptical about David
Cameron’s pledge to hold a
EU referendum.
After all, both he and other
party leaders have deceived
the public before!
Labour promised one before
the 2005 election, as did the
Tories and Lib Dems in 2010,
all were ditched once they
came to power.
Mr Cameron is not
promising a referendum now,
but in the future. Why not
now? This is merely a
publicity stunt to get him reelected
at the next election.
We have heard these words
time and again from him, and
he must not be allowed to be
voted in to power again at the
next election, until he has
delivered a referendum on
the EU first.
It’s 37 years since the last
one, and how times have
changed since then.
The British public deserves
the right to vote on this.
And the 1975 referendum
was held, only after Edward
Heath’s government had
already “taken Britain in”.
Mr Cameron must fight for
British interests now.
That means restoring
sovereignty rights over
immigration, human rights,
employment regulation and a
host of other issues,which
have been lost to Brussels
over the years.
Britain’s political destiny is
not a debating issue for
leaders on the continent.
