SIR – John Phillpott is plain wrong to assert that the Green Party go along with the current set-up of the European Union (Worcester News, July 21).

To be clear, we do recognise the value of the original post- Second World War goal to remove the threat of another war between European states.

These goals have been distorted by vested political and economic interests into a union dominated by economic interests, which lacks democratic control and promotes the goals of multinational corporations, not of people.

Contrary to John’s statements, we would in fact reform the Common Agricultural and Fishing Policies that sometimes wastes so much of our money, food and resources.

For the record, we believe that far too much power has already been given away to Europe, we have never been a supporter of the euro single currency and firmly believe that there should have been a UK-wide referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.

We do believe in working with Europe on cross-border environmental issues as well as establishing common basic human rights.

We do not believe in creating a one size fits all, ever closer centralising economic union run by and on behalf of big business.

It is good to see people are waking up to Europe’s problems but let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water – we still need to work closely with our European colleagues on matters such as the environmental and animal rights issues.
