SIR – Re your editorial about tuition fees (Worcester News , August 17).
Indeed, isn’t it sad that university education can be seen as a burden because of the enormous debt an individual will pick up?
As late as last year, the Government was promising that fees higher than £6,000 up to a maximum of £9,000 would only be allowed in “exceptional circumstances”.
This has proven not to be true, as even the ‘lowliest’ colleges are now charging a minimum of £6,000.
MPs speak of “social mobility”, yet students from more modest backgrounds have been deterred from applying.
While I am not saying that attending university is the sole means by which someone can progress in society, I do believe that it is an incredible shame that talented individuals will decide not to extend their education because of a lack of money.
