JURORS were warned not to make their decision lightly as the trial of two men over the murder of a Droitwich pensioner neared its conclusion.

David Mason QC was summing up the defence case when he warned jurors they must be “absolutely sure” Adam Mason is guilty before delivering their verdict.

Mr Mason called into question the prosecution’s case, saying not enough of it matched up for the jury to be certain of guilt.

He said: “Some time tomorrow the 12 of you will retire to a room somewhere in this building and make what may well turn out to be one of the most important decisions of your lives.

“You have to be absolutely sure Adam Mason murdered Desmond Wooding and nothing short of that will do.”

Mr Mason went on to discuss issues relating to the description of the suspect in the murder, saying this was different to any description of Adam Mason, who is on trial alongside his 55 year-old uncle Mark, who is alleged to have driven the 33 year-old Mason away from the scene.

David Mason continued: “There are so many pieces of the jigsaw that just don’t fit together. How can all these factors, even when taken together, make you sure that Adam Mason killed Desmond Wooding?”

On a previous day of the trial, jurors in Worcester heard the prosecution case, which claims CCTV footage from Vines Lane shows Adam Mason’s guilt.

The 33 year-old was charged with murder following 80-year-old Mr Wooding’s death in June last year.

On the second day of the trial, prosecutor Adrian Keeling told the jury an examination of the crime scene found five steak forks but only four steak knives in the victim’s kitchen – with the missing knife the suspected murder weapon.

The jury was expected to retire today (March 10) to deliberate.

Both Adam and Mark Mason deny any part in Mr Wooding’s murder.
