MAJOR roadwork projects across Worcestershire will continue during the coronavirus lockdown.

Worcestershire County Council announced schemes including the dualling of the Southern Link Road from the M5 to Powick Roundabout, and the Pershore infrastructure scheme are still going ahead amid the disruption caused by the pandemic.

This comes after the completion of work including the Hams Way footbridge and Pump Street in Worcester.

Work is also continuing on the road improvements through St John’s and on the re-opening of Sabrina Bridge, which was pushed back after flooding in Worcester before Christmas.

Councillor Ken Pollock, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Economy and Infrastructure, said: “We have some really important projects happening across the county and it’s great news that work continues on these.

“Our contractors already have a number of measures in place to ensure work can be undertaken safely. These are kept under review and will remain for as long as needed.

“The projects that we have already managed to deliver during the pandemic is a testament to the hard work of the teams involved.”

The St John’s roadwork scheme, widely criticised by local residents and councillors, resumed on January 4 after a Christmas break which gave some welcome respite to people in the area.

Sabrina Bridge is also set to re-open in the next few days, with work resuming after water levels on the River Severn receding.

In addition, several planned schemes are set to commence in the coming months including improvements at Hoobrook Roundabout in Kidderminster, walking and cycling improvements ahead of the Bromsgrove Route Enhancement Programme and further works in Redditch, as part of the Town Centre Improvement programme.
