POLICE investigating the death of a 69-year old-woman have launched an appeal to find a potential key witness.

The investigation was launched after Janet Mason died at an address in Green Lane, Worcester, on March 9.

Jessica Craine, 49, of Hillside Close, Worcester, was later charged with murder and is currently in custody.

Officers say they are keen to identify a man who walked past the property on the morning of the incident.

Detective Sergeant Grant Lawrence said: “We are trying to trace a man who walked past the property in Green Lane at around 10.30am on Tuesday 9 March.

"It’s important to stress we do not believe this man was involved in the incident in any way and he is not suspected of any wrongdoing but we believe he may have walked past the property in Green Lane at the relevant time and we wish to speak with him in case he saw or heard anything that may assist with the investigation."

The police say they have an image of the man which they may consider releasing, if officers are unable to identify him in this first appeal.

Police can be contacted on 101, quoting incident 164i of 9 March, or through the Tell Us About section of the West Mercia Police website.

Since her death, the family of Janet Mason have paid tribute to a "kind and selfless lady".

In a tribute they said: "Janet was the kindest, hardest working and most selfless lady with the biggest most compassionate heart and her loss will be felt by all her family and friends.

"Janet is survived by her four sons Glen, Shane, Chad and Luke.

"Forever and always in our hearts and thoughts."

Craine, 49, of Hillside Close, appeared at Worcester Crown Court on March 14 via video-link, where she spoke only to confirm her name and whether she could hear the proceedings.

Judge James Burbidge said she could face trial next year, but that a psychiatric report would have to be completed before then.
