AROUND 150 people gathered in Cathedral Square today to protest the Government's police, crime, sentencing and courts bill.

Activists of all ages braced the hail stones to 'defend their democractic right to protest' at The Elgar Statue in the city earlier today.

Although nobody came forward to admit they organised the protest, representatives from Extinction Rebellion, Black Lives Matter and the Socialist Party all attended.

Elston Gunn, 19, founder of Black Lives Matter Worcestershire said: "I am here because I want a better world for everybody. We must make a stand and not let our voices be silenced.

"I think this bill is fascist. It has no place in a legitimate working democracy. I am grateful to whoever organised this protest and I think everyone here should be proud that they are fighting for their democratic rights."

The socially distanced and peaceful protest started around 1pm and lasted for around 30 minutes.

Speakers from each group took turns speaking and the crowd held up hand made signs and placards which read things like 'Protest is vital for change' and 'Kill the Bill'.

Protesters chanted 'Kill the Bill' and 'Democracy matters.'

Black Lives Matter, Sarah Everard and Women Matter were also themes mentioned by the activists.

Police were present. One police car was stationed opposite Cathedral Square and two officers were stood nearby.

One officer said: "We are just here to make sure nothing gets out of hand. The protesters are able to do as they wish but we will step in if things were to get violent.

The protest remained peaceful despite one man wearing a 'Make America Great Again' cap chanting 'All Lives Matter.'

The unknown man said he was there 'to protect' the Elgar statue.
