A BARMAN ‘with bondage gear’ is on trial for rape after first touching a woman intimately before having sex with her as she lay in bed.

Richard Glazzard, 34, who had been working as a barman at the Slug and Lettuce in Worcester, denies raping the woman, who had been asleep at his city flat.

The defendant claims sex was consensual as his trial before Judge Nicholas Cole got underway at Worcester Crown Court.

Glazzard, of Friar Street, Worcester, pleaded not guilty to the rape which is alleged to have taken place on Sunday, October 27, 2019.

Simon Phillips, prosecuting, said: “He was told ‘no’ and to stop, the complainant repeating this request on six or seven occasions.”

Later that morning the complainant called a friend and told her what she said Glazzard had done to her.

The allegation was reported to police on November 11, 2019 and Glazzard was arrested the next day at work.

The court heard how Glazzard had also purchased a bondage set and had been intent on using it.

Mr Phillips said the woman had told him ‘no, I’m not in the mood’ and ‘could not have made it clearer’ that she did not want to have sex with him.

He said: “She did not move during this time and described the feeling of being frozen and not being able to breathe.”

During his opening he also described how the complainant called her best friend ‘crying’ and stating that she needed to see her ‘right now’.

When her friend asked the complainant what was wrong she was reported to have said: “He didn’t stop. He didn’t stop.”

She added: “He just did it. I can’t say the word because it makes me feel sick.”

Messages from the defendant included apologies only to be told: “Dogs understand the word no.” In one message she refers to rape.

“In his reply he does not challenge or question the use of that word,” said Mr Phillips.

In his interview Glazzard told officers ‘at no point did she say no’. He had recalled she was ‘upset’, the court heard.

When asked what his understanding was of why she was so angry with him he replied: “That she thought I basically raped her.”

The trial continues.
