A biker whose foot was almost amputated after a crash has urged other motorcyclists to learn from his mistakes.

Lee Sharp, 32, from Droitwich, was left with serious injuries following a crash in Martin Hussingtree on Sunday, September 26.

Lee is now making a recovery and his foot will not have to be amputated, as he and his partner, Hannah Drew, feared would be the case.

Lee admitted he was not wearing the proper safety equipment that day and has urged other bikers not to make the same mistake.

He said: “To any persons that rides mopeds or motorbikes without suitable gear think this, ‘it just takes that one time’.

“How and when a crash will happen is a bit like roulette, there's a chance it will happen.”

Lee explained that whilst he was wearing a helmet, he was not wearing gloves or practical trousers and the jacket he was wearing was not properly padded.

However, Lee said that his choice of footwear was his greatest error.

He said: “Converse shoes, the biggest mistake I believe I made. My left shoe was ripped off foot along with sock and flesh I believe on impact.”

Asked whether he has learnt from this, Lee replied: “Simple answer is no, the only lesson to learn is to wear the correct gear but I knew the danger of not wearing it.

“I almost always do wear full motorbike gear, professionally trained instructors will always and keep on always telling you to wear the right gear, be it a little moped or high-performance sportbike, but this day I made the decision not to and I paid the price for it.

“I do feel fortunate that the main injury was just a foot. Foolish me.”

Lee has decided he will never ride a motorbike again and also wants the road where the crash happened to be assessed.

He added: “I would not want to go through anything like this again. The whole experience from crash site to operations and recovering has been too much.

“There are those that get back up and ride again and then like me there are those that don't.

“The road where the accident happened needs re-evaluating, I and I know others would agree this is a very dodgy junction. What exactly needs to be done I’m not sure, but a much clearer system is needed.”

Since the crash, Lee has had two operations, one of which involved part of his left thigh being transplanted onto his foot, which was ‘degloved’ by the incident.

Lee now faces a long road to full recovery and doesn’t expect to be able to walk for months.
