THE victim of a machete attack was seen holding a gaping wound to his head as CCTV footage from A&E in Worcester was played to a jury.

Footage of Owais Saleem clutching his bleeding face at Worcestershire Royal Hospital was played on big screens at Worcester Crown Court on Wednesday following a "ferocious" attack in Wyld's Lane, Worcester.

Usman Multani, 27, of Westminster Road, Ronkswood, Kaasim Multani, 23, also of Westminster Road and Shahenul Alam, of Ivor Road, Sparkhill, deny attempted murder, violent disorder and inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.

We have previously reported how Mr Saleem suffered a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain following the attack at around 1am in Wyld's Lane, Worcester on November 24, 2019.

Peter Glenser QC took the jury through various CCTV footage, mobile phone data and ANPR camera evidence with a police data analyst, showing the movements of the defendants and their vehicles before and after the attack.

He said of the CCTV footage from the hospital: "There's an injury to the right hand side of his face which you see. He's holding the left hand side of his head which had another injury." Before the footage was shown Mr Glenser had talked the jury through the movement of cars and mobile phones linked to each of the defendants before, during and after the alleged attack - a VW Golf the prosecution say is linked to the Multani brothers and a Mercedes C-Class they say is linked to Alam.

The prosecution had described a rendezvous before the attack with the phones of defendants engaging masts on the west side of the river at Hylton Road in Worcester. The vehicles are described as travelling in convoy along Newtown Road towards the Ronkswood area before heading 'in a westerly direction towards the area of the attack'.

The cars were picked up by CCTV cameras outside Lea and Perrins in Midland Road and the Horizon Centre and as they travelled into Stanley Road and Vincent Road before 'looping around', back onto Wyld's Lane.

The CCTV also picks up four men running away and Mr Saleem later walking into the Horizon centre car park after the attack where he is put into a car and driven to the hospital.

Mr Glenser said during his opening, which finished on Wednesday: "It is the prosecution's case the Multani brothers and Shahenul Alam were part of a group of men who unlawfully caused the injuries to Owais Saleem, and at the time of the attack intended to kill him."'

Mr Glenser described escalating tensions between two groups in the run up to the attack - the Multani group from Ronkswood that included Luke Bridger and a Zahid 'Ali' group.

The "friction" the prosecutor said included a number of incidents prior to the attack including damage to a car, and police being called to Luke Bridger's home with the Multani group saying Zahid Ali had tried to kidnap Mr Bridger's uncle Jason.

The prosecutor's case is that two cars, a Mercedes and a Volswagen Golf, travelled in convoy to the scene of the attack in Wyld's Lane, as the Multani group sought revenge on the Ali group.

Mr Glenser said Usman Multani had left the Mercedes carrying a baseball bat, while Kaasim left the same car carrying a machete.

He said Alam also joined in the attack with others who left the Golf, and together the gang "set upon" the victim delivering repeated blows that brought the victim to the floor.

"Once there they continued to deliver blow after blow with weapons, fists and feet," the prosecutor said.

After initially going to Worcestershire Royal Hospital the victim was transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and a consultant who operated on him said he was lucky to have avoided more significant brain injuries.

The trial continues.
