A 'CHANGED' knifeman begged to be spared jail because he feared his incarceration would give his sick mum migraines.

However, Martin Kolar's mother believed he would inevitably go to prison after he threatened Bushwackers nightclub staff with a 10inch blade - so his family did not pay for anyone to represent him.

The 23-year-old begged not to be sent to jail when he appeared before Worcester's top judge, James Burbidge QC, on Tuesday.

He told the judge: "If I end up being inside she stresses. She gets migraines. Her MS gets worse."

But he also revealed that his family did not see the point in paying a solicitor - as he was bound to go down.

Kolar of Aycliffe Road, St Peter's, Worcester, was so softly spoken the judge asked him to come out of the dock so he could mitigate on his own behalf.

Despite several hearings, he still had not secured legal representation.

We can now reveal further details of the case which involved Kolar wielding a 10inch blade after being refused entry to the club on July 4 last year and hitting a man over the head with a bottle of cider just six days later on July 10 as well as punching his friend in the jaw.

Kolar explained to the judge his mum was ill with MS.

But Judge Burbidge responded: "How would it help her, getting drunk and starting fights with people?"

The defendant said his mum had been 'really ill' and that 'I didn't take it well'. He explained he believed he had ADHD and had been with 'the wrong type of people'.

Asked why he had no advocate, Kolar said: "I've been struggling to get one, struggling to pay for one."

He added: "Obviously my family think I'm going to go to custody. My mum thinks I'm going to custody."

Anticipating this, he said his family had had to move house, knowing they would not have the benefit of his income were he to be jailed.

Kolar pleaded guilty to the knife offence at the first hearing at Worcester Magistrates Court on February 3, the ABH on January 31 (the day of trial) and the battery on November 4 last year.

"I left the people I used to hang around with," he told the judge. "All I do is come to work, come home, cook a meal for my mum, take the dog out. I have really changed.

"It took a lot to cut everyone off. The only people I speak to are my family and my boss" he said.

He added: "I hope I don't get sent to prison today."

Kolar did attend court with other people. However, there was nobody present in the public gallery when he received his jail sentence.
