A NEW bargain supermarket is opening in Worcester this month - but signs outside mistakenly refer to the store being in Droitwich.

The finishing touches are being added to the city's new Lidl store which is due to open on Thursday, August 11.

It will be the city's third Lidl supermarket, the company having already opened stores in Blackpole and Newtown Road.

However, advertising signs outside the new store have caused confusion because they refer to Lidl being 'big on Droitwich' even though the store is in Worcester.

It seems the mistake may have been made as it is opening on Droitwich Road in Worcester.

The new store, which is still behind a chain-link fence, has had all the parking bays painted and the pedestrian crossing marked out. The distinctive external signs have also already been fitted and even shopping trolleys are arranged neatly outside, ready for staff to welcome the first customers.

By the time we went to press, Lidl had not responded to enquiries about the error on the sign or for any fresh information about the development.

Developers behind the supermarket have previously confirmed that construction work has now been completed.

Andrew Fisher, managing director of Ashfield Land, said in May: “The building working has been completed, it was finished a month ago.

“Lidl has now moved in and are fitting it out with shelving, and stocking it up before the Lidl sign will go up."

Around 40 full and part-time jobs are understood to have been created.

Contractor Benniman Construction moved onto the site, on the car park of JVC Castings, Worcester, in June 2021.

The work has involved demolishing a small underused part of the casting specialists' factory and moving the staff car park to the side to make way for the new supermarket.

The site received planning permission from Worcester City Council in 2020.

The new supermarket will be the chain’s third Lidl in the city, with stores already open in Blackpole and Newtown Road.

The 2,200 square metre supermarket will include a bakery and self-service checkouts.

A 110-space car park including six disabled bays and eight parent and child spaces is forming part of the site.

The existing car park to the front of JVM Castings is being moved to the side with a total of 125 car parking spaces provided for the factory.
