A FIRE has broken out on a field next to Whittington Road in Worcester.

Emergency services arrived at the field at around 3.15 pm today as smoke could  be seen billowing from the field.

The smoke had spread across the field while the fire service worked to put out the blaze. 

A black line dividing the burned land from the untouched land is visible in the field, showing where the fire was.

Emily Ramage, an eyewitness to the fire, reported the flames to Hereford and Worcester  Fire and Rescue Service, who told her that she was the second person to phone about the fire.

She said: "It's madness. We could see the waves from the heat first and thought it didn't look right.

"We got closer and saw the smoke and then the fire. 

"My mum was driving, she dropped me off as we were taking some food shopping back and we came back to make sure the fire services were here.

"It's crazy. I've lived here all my life and I have never seen anything like this before."

Aidan Smyth, a Worcester archaeologist, also witnessed the fire.

He said: "I have lived here for 30 years and I have never seen this before.

"I only live over the road and it's quite scary. It's just unbelievable.

"It looks like it's the stubble that has burned and not the crop, otherwise the whole thing would be up in flames. 

"There's a monument at the bottom of the field so I came out to look because I will have to report that to Historic England for work. 

"We phoned the fire brigade as soon as we saw the smoke but they said that somebody was already there."

Gemma Butcher, who drove past the fire, said: "I was thinking of the devastation it’s going to cause to the land owners and farmers.

"Things are hard enough as it is without suffering effects of fires. I really hope it wasn’t deliberate."
