A POPULAR city centre coffee shop has closed its doors to make way for a new venture.

Clockwatchers Coffee house and Bistro in Mealcheapen Street served its last customers and shut its doors for good.

However, a message on its doors hinted that plans were afoot for a new venture.

A message from the owner said he was not "mentally or physically able to continue".

The statement said: "I have come to the decision to take an offer on the lease as I no longer feel mentally or physically able to continue to push the business forward on my own."

The post went on to say that despite the closure of the location, the business will survive as a mobile business later this year.

"That said, keep an eye out on this page as we will be moving into a smaller mobile business towards the end of the year.

"Thank you for your support over the last year"

On the door of the coffee shop, a sign reads "something new is comming [sp] soon".

Jason Smart began renovating the shop in October last year.

While work was going on, lots of people were excited for the cafe's return with Mr Smart reporting that every time the doors were open while they revamped people were trying to come in.

At the time, he said: "We have about 20 people trying to come in when the door is open - any time we've left the door open people have tried to come in which is always a good sign.

Mr Smart, from St John's, had plans to open up the coffee shop at nights for events.

He has experience in hospitality having previously run the city's Slug and Lettuce and Ginger's cafe in Stourport.

Speaking ahead of last year's reopening, Mr Smart said: "It had a good reputation before.

"There's been a lot of interest in us reopening so I am sure that's a good sign."

It is the second city centre eaterie to close after Be The Change in New Street was put on the market.

The vegan cafe had announced it would be temporarily closing for two weeks but has since had a For Sale board placed on the premises with the building listed on RightMove.
