A MAJOR supermarket is set to move into the former Pound Shop store on Worcester's High Street.

Tesco Express will be moving to the location after it was confirmed that the Pound Shop was set to close earlier this month.

The supermarket giant recently submitted a new application to sell alcohol at the new location between 6am and midnight every day.

The application is also for 'late night refreshment' every day between 11pm and midnight.

Earlier this week, The Pound Shop could be seen displaying "closing down sale" signs in its windows.

The signs in the shop windows read: "Closing down sale" and "Everything must go".
The Pound Shop first opened in Worcester in October 2021 and saw queues of people lining up to be the first through the doors.

Originally, the opening was for planned September 2021, but it had to be pushed back due to fuel shortages, lorry driver shortages and stock issues caused by Brexit.

The shop will be closing in under a year from when it first opened its doors.

The unit was previously empty for almost three years after music chain HMV closed in 2019.

HMV made the decision to close in Worcester after its new owner said it was no longer a viable business option.

We reported how the city's HMV will close its doors on January 25 after signs were spotted in the show window.

Worcester city centre still has a Home Bargains, a B&M and a Bargain Buys within walking distance of each other.

Another Tesco Express store in the city centre is currently based on Foregate Street, next to the train station.

A date has not yet been confirmed when the new Tesco Express is set to open in Worcester.

We have contacted Tesco for more information.
