CARD payments have been suspended at the city’s car parks after an error has led to drivers being charged several times.

Worcester City Council has been forced to suspend debit and credit card payments at its car parks as it continues to investigate a fault which has seen some drivers charged dozens of times for one ticket.

The city council said it now believes that drivers have had several payments taken from their bank accounts after parking in Worcester – after first thinking the issue had been caused by card payments being processed late.

The council said it does not yet know how many people have been affected by the fault and will be covering over card machines until they are disabled.

In the meantime, drivers have been asked to pay for parking in cash, or by using the RingGo app.

A spokesperson for the council said: “It has now become clear that in addition to the problem of the late processing of card transactions, some customers have also suffered from duplicate transactions, meaning that multiple payments for the same ticket have been taken from their bank accounts.

“We would like to apologise to anyone affected by this and to assure the public that we are doing our utmost to resolve the issue as swiftly as possible.

“Customers who believe that they have had multiple payments taken from their account in error should contact their bank immediately, as the bank will have processes in place to deal with such situations, including providing refunds.
