PUPILS from a Worcester school which closed in 1966 are organising a reunion at a city pub.

Worcester Technical School was located in the Victoria Institute, the great Victorian edifice that stands next to the Shirehall and spans the plot of land between Foregate Street and Sansome Walk.

Ian Bennett is one of the organisers behind the reunion, set to be held at the King's Head pub in Sidbury in November.

Mr Bennett, who attended the school from 1959-62, is one of the pupils organising the reunion

He said: "I am from Worcester but I am now based in Burton, Staffordshire, so a large part of wanting this reunion is due to homesickness and salmon instinct.

"We have about 15 people meeting up at The King's Head in Sidbury on November 4 just after midday.

"It will be really lovely to see everyone again."

The former pupils, aged between 76 to 77, first got in contact twenty years ago over the internet and arranged their first meet-up in 2009.

Mr Bennett said: "When we first started to research all the former pupils, we accounted for 55 out of 60 pupils in our year.

"Obviously some had moved abroad or had sadly passed away, but we were able to get in contact with a lot of people which was good.

"The school was practically all boys, with only two girls in our year group."

The Technical High School occupied the back of the Victoria Institute, behind the city museum and the art gallery.

It specialised in teaching technical subjects and took students between the ages of 13-16.

Pupils who went to “the Tech”, as it was known, were virtually guaranteed apprenticeships with the many engineering firms in and around Worcester at the time, principally Heenan & Froude, Metal Box and Archdales.
