WE tried a controversial festive milkshake available in Worcester city centre.

Five Guys, in Cathedral Square, is now selling a 'pigs in blankets' flavoured milkshake which divided opinion in the Worcester News office.

The Christmas-themed beverage consists of a traditional vanilla-flavoured Five Guys shake, with actual chunks of crumbled bacon.

The milkshakes start from £5.45 and will be available at Five Guys restaurants until Boxing Day.

On arrival, we were greeted by manager George Hinds, who made the drink for us, describing it as a perfect blend of "sweet and savoury".

The shake was prepared fresh and served in a takeaway Five Guys cup, topped with whipped cream.

Outside the restaurant, the milkshake is being advertised to customers on a display board.

The board tells you that the milkshake is 742 calories, and made with three strips of bacon.

On first taste, you could assume the drink is just a normal vanilla milkshake, with an instant rich flavour.

It is perhaps slightly saltier, but in a way which compliments the drink similar to salted caramel.

Further down into the drink is where you find the chunks of crumbled bacon which was the ingredient which left the office divided.

To some, the crispy bacon was a welcome inclusion, providing a savoury and smokey pairing to the rich, sweet milkshake, and a nice crunch.

The flavours were said to cancel each other out and create a well-balanced drink.

To others, the bacon was far too peculiar an addition to a drink which does not traditionally pair with savoury food.

Despite the rich vanilla, some who tried the drink said that the bacon was far too overpowering.

Five people in the Worcester News Office tasted the drink, with three saying it was nice and two saying they would not try it again.

Five Guys does also have more traditional mix-in flavours including chocolate, bananas and salted caramel, which may be a safer option if you find yourself in the city centre with a sweet tooth.

The burger chain is one of several restaurants in Cathedral Square, such as ASK Italian, Starbucks, All-Bar-One, Pizza Express, Miller and Carter and Cosy Club.
