PUPILS of a school which closed its doors back in 1966 held a reunion event in Worcester.

The Worcester Technical High School class of 1962 attended the"Valedictory Reunion" earlier this month, 60 years since leaving the school.

The group met at the King's Head pub in Sidbury for lunch and a drink to catch up and reminisce on their time at the school.

Ian Bennett, one of the organisers behind the reunion, said those in attendance were eager to host more get-togethers in the future.

He said: "It was enthusiastically agreed that further get-togethers could happen on a casual basis as quite a few old classmates were unable to attend this one due to many various pre-scheduled appointments.

"Of the 40 pupils from the class of 62 that are still surviving, 17 managed to attend, some travelling quite a distance from places such as Bolton, Derby, Taunton and Evesham."

Out of all the pupils in the class of 1962, only two were girls, who both attended the event.

Ian said: " Also in the group, the only two girls in the year were able to come which was a very pleasant surprise, along with others that hadn't been seen since leaving the Victoria Institute 60 years ago."

The former pupils, aged between 76 to 77, first got in contact twenty years ago over the internet and arranged their first meet-up in 2009.

Worcester Technical School was located in the Victoria Institute, the great Victorian edifice that stands next to the Shirehall and spans the plot of land between Foregate Street and Sansome Walk.

The Technical High School occupied the back of the Victoria Institute, behind the city museum and the art gallery.

It specialised in teaching technical subjects and took students between the ages of 13-16.

Pupils who went to “The Tech”, as it was known, were virtually guaranteed apprenticeships with the many engineering firms in and around Worcester at the time, principally Heenan & Froude, Metal Box and Archdales.
