A CITY pizza restaurant has donated 1000 pizzas to emergency service workers, charities and homeless people in Worcester.

Fireaway Pizza, on Angel Street, is also launching a new weekly service where pizzas will be given to the homeless and vulnerable every Monday.

The team has donated pizzas to NHS workers and paramedics at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Salvation Army staff and homeless people in the city centre.

Fireaway Pizza opened its doors to the public on Bank Holiday Monday (August 29), and saw hundreds of attendees descend on Angel Street.

The business gave away free pizzas to 100 customers, a £500 giveaway competition as well as free food for the homeless and the vulnerable.

It revealed that during the day it made 300 pizzas and ended up running out of dough due to the high demand.

Aerial pictures taken at the opening showed hundreds of people on the city centre road, and a woman holding a smoke grenade which billowed throughout the street.

On the other side of the road, black and orange balloons were installed, alongside a punchbag machine and signs for the restaurant.

Police were forced to shut the road due to a build-up of long queues and people in the area.

Officers moved to shut the road based on safety concerns as the road became crowded with people. No prior road closure for the event had been organised.

The restaurant cooks pizza in a stoned-fired oven at 400C, taking approximately 180 seconds.

The first restaurant was opened by Mario Aleppo in London, back in 2016, and five years later the brand has over 120 branches in England, Scotland and Wales.
