A MAJOR multi-million-pound development to regenerate Worcester is taking shape with the city's MP having a look at the progress so far.

Worcester MP Robin Walker had a tour around the Sherriff Gate project, which is already transforming the city's skyline, on Friday.

Building work is already well advanced - and on target - with dizzying aerial photos showing the scale of the development.

The 'largest regeneration project in the history of Worcester' got officially underway in July and is expected to bring 'hundreds' of jobs to the city when finished.

The £150 million scheme to regenerate Shrub Hill will bring hundreds of new apartments (including affordable housing), a hotel, gym, multi-storey car park, food and beverage outlets, a multiscreen cinema and ten-pin bowling to the city.

A project spokesperson said on Friday: "The superstructure of Block A1 continues to progress well. Level 4 rising elements and the 5th floor precast planks are being installed this week. The structural topping will be installed on the 5th floor next week.

"The envelope to Block A1 has now commenced. We are currently installing SFS and CP board to the 1st floor. The CP board and windows are key for getting each floor plate watertight.

"The superstructure to block A2 is also progressing very well. We are currently complete up to 3rd floor. With scaffolding progressing alternately between each block each week, to ensure we stay a floor ahead of the precast.

"The superstructure for both blocks is on target to be complete in Q1 2023."

When completed over the next three to four years, it is hoped the phased project will transform 9000,000 square feet of industrial land, creating jobs for local people and providing new opportunities, including apprenticeships.

Stennard Harrison, managing director of Worcester-based Sherriff Gate Developments said the development would bring 'hundreds of permanent jobs' to the city and a 'massive injection of cash' via shops, leisure activities, food outlets, a gym and a 200-bed hotel.

Born and bred in Worcester, Mr Harrison, 53, said he had continued the work of his father whom he called 'an inspirational fellow'.

Mr Harrison, born in South Bank in Bath Road, Worcester, attended St Mary's Convent in Battenhall, Hawford Lodge (now King's Hawford) and Sacred Heart College in Droitwich so has deep roots in the city.

He said: "I've got Worcester running through my veins. I'm more passionate about Worcester than anyone you know. My passion for Worcester is second to none. This is the biggest project Worcester has ever seen.

"For many years this part of Worcester hasn't looked the best. It will give the gateway and the front door to the city centre."
