STAFF from a country pub were left feeling chuffed after their Sunday Roast was voted as one of the best in the country.

Bretforton's The Fleece Inn, in Bretforton, near Evesham, has been named in a list of 68 of the best places to get a Sunday roast in England, by Muddy Stilettos.

Nigel Smith, who has been the landlord at The Fleece Inn for 20 years, said: "It feels great, we put a lot of effort into sourcing local food and putting a great load of effort into the food we supply.

"This type of recognition is very gratifying and it made my chef's day.

"Customers said they were not surprised.

"It is a traditional pub, what more could you want, sitting by the fire on a cold afternoon?

Mr Smith, age 58, said having loyal punters is at the heart of everything they do.

"It's good that people are recognising the work we do but having satisfied customers willing to come back time after time is a great pleasure.

Although most businesses are being hit by the pressures of the cost-of-living crisis, but Mr Smith said: "At the moment we have gone a little bit quieter than what it was like last year.

"I think you have to recognise that things are difficult for people, and it is even more important to offer the best food, service, and ambience.

"But we have got some great events coming up and they are proving to be very successful."

Muddy Stilettos praised the pub for its "famous roasts" with meats "from chicken and lamb to beef, pork and nut roast."

Earlier this year, Mr Smith staged the 'world's biggest' Nigel night in his pub in the hopes to save the name Nigel from becoming extinct.

Mr Smith was left feeling shocked after the Office for National Statistics revealed that no babies called Nigel were born in 2016 or 2020.

And he has been inviting Nigels from across the world to join him for a celebratory knees-up since 2016.
