URGENT calls have been made for a speed camera or other traffic calming measures on a busy main road before 'someone is hurt'.

Residents in Tetbury Drive, Warndon, Worcester say cars regularly speed despite existing traffic calming measures and a flashing warning sign.

However, Cllr Jill Desayrah, who has pushed for proper speed monitoring on behalf of residents, says Tetbury Drive has now been promised equipment to gauge the scale of the issue. The data would be gathered over seven days, 24 hours a day via a cable across the main road, she said.

But Highways bosses do not think speeding on the road is an issue at the moment.

Cllr Desayrah said: "Local residents in Tetbury Drive have been concerned about speeding cars at certain times of day for years, and we want the relevant authorities to take these concerns seriously before someone is hurt."

Meanwhile, a resident, who declined to be named, said he believed the speed limit should be 20mph, not 30mph, because of the proximity of the school. "Cars speed in both directions yet the authorities seem to think there's nobody speeding up here," he said.

Cllr Desayrah said: "On behalf of my concerned residents I'm delighted that the local Road Safety team has now offered this equipment. I'm confident this will answer everyone's questions on the matter with a full week's worth data. Further steps, if any, can be determined from there."

A spokesperson for the West Mercia Police Road Safety said: "West Mercia Police Road Safety Team are aware of the speeding concerns on Tetbury Drive in Worcester and are in communication with Councillor Desayrah and the local Safer Neighbourhood Team about the issue. Speed data will be collected in the area in the near future and results will be reviewed to determine any further action."

Cllr Jill Desayrah, the Warndon ward councillor, has previously written to Worcestershire County Council with her concerns and has suggested a speed camera or chicanes - but such measures could not be introduced without hard data.

"What we really want is a speed camera," said Cllr Desayrah.

The Labour councillor says traffic from the direction of Blackpole Road was using Tetbury Drive as a 'cut-through' since the new roundabout was installed.

She added: "It is witnessing these speeding cars that prompted residents to ask for my help in finding ways to reduce speeding."

A 30mph flashing speed reminder sign was introduced on Tetbury Drive in the summer but Cllr Desayrah has called into question its impact on driving habits - and it does not record data.

Cllr Desayrah said: "In the meantime, I asked the County Council Highways Department to consider installing chicanes along the road.

"This was very quickly declared to be impractical and refused.

"All the while school children crowding along narrow footpaths on Tetbury Drive are at risk from the speeding cars witnessed daily by my residents there."

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said: “There is a traffic calming scheme currently in place along Tetbury Drive.

"A recent speed survey carried out on Tetbury Drive in December showed speeds well within the current limitations and doesn’t suggest any current issues with speeding."

The council said they would be reviewing the speed signs near Cranham Primary School.
