A new security system is being created at Birmingham Airport.

In a bid to cut queuing times and make the process easier, a new “next generation” security facility is being built.

With work already in progress, anyone flying out over Easter and this summer can expect a few changes upon arrival at the airport.

For the time being, the existing security area remains in use and as such customers will be faced with new walking routes and queuing spaces.

Nick Barton, chief executive of BHX, said: “Imagine a football stadium having its stands rebuilt and its pitch re-laid while continuing to stage matches … that’s rather like what we’re doing at Birmingham Airport right now.

“Customers will see construction outside the terminal and various areas cordoned off. Walking routes and queuing spaces, including on the ground floor, will change this summer as work progresses.

“Our wayfinding and other signage will change too - and, of course, our friendly staff will be on hand to help customers stay on the move.”

In total, Birmingham Airport has invested up to £40m in the security hall upgrade in order to meet new UK Government standards which must be met by June 1.

The Next-Generation Security system should provide a “speedier and simpler” pre-flight screening process capable of serving “significantly more” customers per hour.

It is due to be completed and operational by June 2024.

Mr Barton explained that it will allow the airport to grow its customer numbers by a third.

He said: “Our new security area is a major investment which will make things quicker and easier for customers.

“And the improved efficiency it delivers will help grow our annual customer numbers from 12m to 18m by 2033, in turn helping boost economic growth across the West Midlands region.”

People travelling this Easter are reminded to arrive at least two hours before their flight and help airport staff with the arrival process by preparing your hand luggage for the security scanners.

Customers should remove all large electronics, liquids, belts, jewellery, jackets and boots.
