A CONTROVERSIAL comedian has thanked Worcester fans for their "support and common sense".

Royston Vasey, best known as Roy 'Chubby' Brown, warned people who were easily offended to stay away from his show at Huntingdon Hall.

Despite having lots of city fans who were excited about the gig, not everyone was happy with the news that he was coming to Worcester.

The comedian performed at the venue in Crowngate despite the backlash and has thanked his loyal Worcester fans and Huntingdon Hall for supporting him.

Sharing a link to the Worcester News article, he said: "Thank you, Worcester Huntingdon Hall, and all of my fans, for your support and common sense.

"It’s Simply Comedy."

Chubby previously performed in the city in March 2022 despite dates cancelled in places like Sheffield and Lancaster due to the outspoken nature of his content.

Bosses from Huntingdon Hall had defended their decision to bring the comedian back to the city for two shows.

A spokesperson from the theatre said: "Our purpose as a venue is to provide a wide variety of events for our audiences to enjoy.

"We have patrons visit from all across Worcestershire and further afield, from a wide range of backgrounds.

"Though not everything we programme will be to everyone’s taste, it’s our job to make sure we cater to all our audience’s preferences.

"Roy Chubby Brown has performed at Huntingdon Hall on many occasions and has a committed and supportive local audience that is happy to see him return."

Worcester News Readers had a mixed response to news of Roy Chubby Brown's appearance in the city.

And Caroline Bennett commented: "I saw him at the Northwick in Worcester in 1992 I think he's so so funny!!"

Others defended his right to perform - despite not enjoying his comedy.

Paul Burton said: "I won’t be going (not my cup of tea), but I would protect his right to perform, the right of the venue to stage it and the right of anyone that wished to see him!!!!"

A third commenter said he thinks Roy is great but also totally sexist.

Steve Monte Pearsall commented: "Roy is great. Totally sexist, and let’s be honest. He does have the habit of saying things we were too scared to say!"
