A DISABLED child was taken to hospital with potentially serious injuries after an incident at a Worcester school.

The five-year-old boy was left with face and head injuries while being transferred to his standing frame using a sling and hoist.

Fort Royal Community Primary School has conducted an investigation and has sent reports and witness statements to Health and Safety.

The school said a member of staff had 'taken responsibility' and the boy's parents were immediately told about the incident.

Ed Francis, headteacher of Fort Royal Community Primary School, said an investigation was carried out on the same day of the incident.

He added the school is managing the member of staff involved in accordance with its HR policies and guidance.

An ambulance was called to the school in Wyld's Lane at 9.40am on Friday, May 5.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "One ambulance attended the scene.

"Upon arrival, we found a child who was assessed by ambulance staff and had potentially serious injuries.

"He was conveyed to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further treatment.”

Mr Francis said: “Unfortunately, one of our pupils who uses a wheelchair sustained some facial injuries whilst being transferred to his standing frame using a sling and hoist.

"We immediately called an ambulance and notified his parents.

"He was treated at Worcestershire Royal Hospital and was discharged home a few hours later.  

“We promptly informed Worcestershire County Council, and following advice from Safeguarding and HR, an investigation was carried out on the same day with reports and witness statements sent to Health and Safety.

"A member of staff has taken responsibility for the accident, and we are managing this in accordance with our HR policies and guidance."

Fort Royal Community Primary School said it recognises the serious nature of the incident and takes all safeguarding concerns seriously.

Mr Francis added: "We have taken immediate action to put measures in place to stop repeat incidents with additional actions to be implemented following further advice from Worcestershire County Council and after a planned meeting with the parents of the child has taken place.”
