A WELL-KNOWN Worcester singer is set to take the stage at the city's first festival this summer.

Wacky Weekender is a three-day festival which begins on Friday, July 21.

The event will feature a wide variety of performances across two stages, a funfair and over 20 food stalls and bars.

Chalky Martin will be performing during the festival and hopes to wow the crowd with his quirky take on classics such as It Must Be Love.

He said: "I hope people will sing along and the crowd is engaged.

"My performance will be an old man dancing around like a teenager."

Although Mr Martin has performed at over 50 venues, he said he has not performed at many festivals.

The festival is making its debut on Pitchcroft in Worcester this year and Mr Martin said: "Anything that goes on in Worcester is going to be good for Worcester because Worcester isn't the biggest for activity.

"Anything that brings people to the face of the city is good.

"Hopefully the show is a success and becomes an annual event."

He will be playing alongside pop legends such as Scouting for Girls, Toploader, The Bluetones and Dodgy, Mr Martin said he is privileged to get these opportunities.

He said: "I don't revel in my own hype, I'm just privileged to get these opportunities."

Ex-police Officer, Steve Oliver is one of the main organisers of the event.

Mr Oliver, stage manager for Wacky Weekender, said: "It is an amazing venture.

"We wanted to create a bonafide music festival.

"The festival is bringing headliners to the city and that does bring a degree of pressure because you are taking up acts who expect a certain level from us so it is important to look after them.

"It will bring a lot of publicity to Worcester."

However, the show is also set to feature upcoming artists from Worcester.

Mr Oliver said: "We have a lot of young artists taking part in the show, it is important that we give the opportunity to young people who are just starting out."

The festival will be running from 4pm to 11pm on Friday and on Saturday it will be running from 12pm to 11pm and on Sunday it will be running from 12pm to 10pm.
